In studying the blood and cardio-vascular system under normal and pathological conditions we have found it necessary to endeavour to determine how the size of the aorta is related to the weight of the individual in any given species of animal. For this purpose we have made a series of measuirements of the aorta in various animals, namely, rabbits, guinea-pigs, rats, mice, and five species of birds. In the present communication only an outline of our results is given, illustrated by reference to the figures which we have obtained on rats and guinea-pigs. We must however draw attention to the fact, that though the measurements which we have made give a reliable relative value for the internal ; circumference of the aorta within each species, they do not necessarily afford an absolute measure of the size of the aorta in these animals during life. To this point we shall have occasion to return in connection with other work. The results which we desire to bring forward are shown in Table I which deals with the measurements in 27 rats covering a range of weight from 30'1 grammes to 303 grammes and Table II which deals with the measurements in 35 guinea-pigs covering a range of weight from 130 grammes to 950 grammes.

Results Comparative effects of exercise The exercise periods appeared to produce peak haemolymph lactate concentrations in each species i.e. 8590 % of maximum measured values ; Fig. 1 ; . Qualitative observations on the behaviour of the crabs during and after exercise, however, indicated differences in the species' abilities to perform sustained vigorous exercise. C. sapidus maintained a high degree of activity, was continually responsive to tactile stimulation, and was never fatigued to the point of becoming refractory. Also, haemolymph lactate concentrations did not begin to level off until after 20 min Fig. 1 ; . The other two species were much less resistant to fatigue. C. guanhumi were able to exercise vigorously i.e. sprint ; for about 4 min, after which they became progressively slower and refractory i.e.

The search for optimal plans, like the search for optimal solutions in many intractable combinatorial problems, can be understood in terms of branching and pruning. Both Heuristic Search and SAT and CSP ; approaches in planning can be understood in this way; the former branches on actions and prunes by extracting and using lower bounds [2], the latter, branches on variables and prunes by constraint propagation and consistency checking [3]. The two approaches for taming the search, however, are closely related, and indeed, current SAT approaches [4] work on the encoding extracted from the planning graph [5]: a structure that can be interpreted as representing both a heuristic function and a precompiled theory. Simplifying a bit, the planning graph can be thought as a sequence of layers P0 , A0 , P1 , such that each layer Pi contains facts and each layer Ai contains actions.
