A WNV vaccine, available through your veterinarian, has been conditionally approved for use in horses. The vaccine is safe and shown to be effective in laboratory tests but has not undergone the complete testing required for final approval. Furtulon, Xeloda Furtulon and Xeloda are orally administered treatments for malignant tumors that combine greater safety with a high level of efficacy. Both are pro-drug forms of the 5-FU 5-fluorouracil ; antitumor agent discovered by previous Nippon Roche's Kamakura Research Laboratories in 1954. Furtulon , a fluoropyrimidine derivative, is effectively converted to 5-FU within tumors and reduces damage to healthy cells. Xeloda, also a fluoropyrimidine derivative, is designed to be converted into Furtulon . After Xeloda spreads through the body it is converted into Furtulon by high concentrations of enzymes in the liver and the tumor. 5-FU then accumulates within the tumor. Furtulon has long been praised for its low degree of bone marrow toxicity and immunosuppresion. Xeloda is even more safe and efficacious than Furtulon, making it an excellent drug. In 2004 there were 48, 000 patients being prescribed Furtulon in Japan including 8, 000 gastric cancer patients, 16, 000 colorectal cancer patients, and 22, 000 breast cancer patients ; . Xeloda is prescribed as a standard treatment for metastatic breast cancer and colorectal cancer in over 70 countries around the world as of December 2003 ; . In Japan, it is approved for the treatment of inoperable or recurrent breast cancer and was prescribed for the treatment of approximately 7, 200 patients in 2004. Xeloda is also under development for an additional indication of gastric cancer and colorectal cancer and the application is scheduled for 2005 for colorectal cancer. Kytril Kytril is a selective inhibitor for the 5-HT3 serotonin ; receptor involved in inducing nausea and vomiting caused by anti-cancer agents, which is found in afferent vagal nerve endings leading to vomiting centers mainly distributed along the gastrointestinal tract. Hepatitis C is the most prevalent liver disease. Viral hepatitis C HCV ; , a small + ; -RNA virus, infects chronically an estimated 300 million people worldwide. HCV displays genetic heterogeneity with the genotype 1 being most common in the US, Europe and Japan, and the most challenging to eradicate. The NS3 serine protease, a pivotal enzyme required for maturation of Hepatitis C virons, assists in processing of the HCV polyprotein by cleaving four downstream sites. Because of its central role in viral replication, inhibition of HCV NS3 serine protease has been actively pursued as target for antiviral therapy. Proof of concept studies in humans with HCV NS3 serine protease inhibitors has been established. Today, we report that extension of our earlier inhibitor to the P4 pocket using esters, acids or ketones moieties and optimization of the P1' capping led to the discovery of new ketoamide inhibitors of the HCV NS3 serine protease with improved in vitro potency.
